Question about teleporter placement!

    Hey all!

I am not sure if this is the right thread to post this in, but I had a question for you all.

    The Setup:

Earlier today I was playing in Server 1 as an engineer. I had placed a teleporter at the top of both stairs in the courtyard. This is to slowdown Pyro rushes to my sentry and to help me spy check people coming in. I have seen this done many times before and I have been doing this since I started playing TF2 many years ago.

Anyway, after about having them up for 10-15 minutes a teammate asked me to move them. I asked why, and he explained that it was slowing his path up the stairs as well. Before I had a chance to respond, Red Valkyrie insisted that I remove teleporters or get kicked/banned for griefing.

I immediately removed the teleporters, but then decided to look up tactics and see if anyone else does this. After finding this tactic on a few websites I came back and mentioned that I wouldn't do it again, but that it should be noted that my teleporter placement was a legitimate, and from my experience effective, strategy.

My response to that was another threat of being kicked, so I decided to drop it. Normally I wouldn't bring this up but it was kind of surprising that I was gonna be kicked/banned for how I play. I never though of myself as a griefer. Red Valkyrie had been harshly criticizing someone else's sentry placement a few minutes earlier, so I just assumed she was having a bad day. She had also been threatening to kick people pretty constantly since she joined the server. I mentioned this to her, and all she said was "OK".

    The Question:

Is placing a teleporter at the top of the courtyard stairs in 2Fort griefing?

    The Conclusion:

Look, if I am out of line, then I apologize and will drop it immediately. I don't mean to add to the rest of the crap you all deal with everyday, I just want to make sure I play in the rules setup by the community.

I really insist that I mean no disrespect to Red or anyone else. I love you guys!

I'll add my .02 here, as I was the one that asked him to move the teleporters from the top of the stairs. After being asked, Jando asked why I wanted them moved. I said that it was slowing people down and would end up killing team mates, and didn't really do much in the way of slowing anyone on the other team down, since they could just jump over it and run across it. I understand his tactic, and his reasoning for placing them their. This is a KNOWN tactic, and I do not believe it to be griefing in any manner (short of the two tele trap method).

Jando was very polite in his dealings with all concerned during the conversation, both about moving the tele's and about the threat of being kicked. He was told by an admin that THEY considered it griefing, therefore it was griefing. I have to disagree with that statement. While an admin has to the power to decide what may or may not be considered griefing and such, I think this may have been taken a bit far.

Just my .02 on the matter.

I find it annoying as somebody on fire trying to hit the resupply room . But that's just me I'm not sure "I" would call it griefing.

I find ANYTHING that slows down, and in the process KILLS, Gen perfectly legal and should be praised...but that's just me. I've never had an issue with the placement of the teleporters. I even ask engineers to place them in such areas because on top of slowing down spys and scouts, it has a chance to teleport the enemy spy into other areas away from you. True that a flaming team mate will have difficulties getting around it quickly, it only takes you jumping over it to get around. I consider it practice.

I agree that it is legal, I just find it annoying as hell. Some engies are good enough to make me have to duck jump to get over the dang things.

With the good comes the bad, ie slow spies / slows burning teammates. If the Pyros on the team are doing there jobs, they don't have to worries about burning to death. Tp griefing would be tp's on the sniper deck moving Snipers to the intel room :p

This has been a common tactic from when I first joined the server and however annoying it is effective. Jando weren't you BoC once upon a time? Sorry for off topic, but just wondering or maybe your just an old regular. Either way thanks for posting.

It's perfectly fine. I always do this to stop spys. If anyone gives you any grief about it just tell them to learn to play.

Yup, I used to be a BoC member!

I HATE THIS. It does nothing but stop teammates coming up the stairs. I've had people in the past do it for just that reason. They put teleporters on the tops of stairs in order to stall their teammates. In this way it is griefing. While I admit that it's not griefing if it's not your intent, it doesn't make it any less annoying. Like placing your sentry in front of my sentry. Maybe you're just stupid, or think my gun is in a bad spot, but you are still being annoying as hell. I get that it slows down spies, but it also slows down your own team, and often gets them killed.

Also, it always feels weird that when the troll does it it's griefing, but when someone else does it, it's a legit tactic. In my mind, if you're doing something that griefers do, you're griefing, or at least close enough that I'm gonna warn you for it. In my mind it boils down to this: You are purposely doing something that you know inconveniences your own team, who did not agree to be thusly inconvenienced. That in my mind is the definition of griefing.

Given the number of people responding the other way around, maybe I'm mistaken here.

It is a matter of deciding when this tactic will help your team. I always did hate it when those TPs were there all the time, but if the other team is in the process of heavily rushing your base, you need to use any tactic you can to slow them down. You really only need a couple of decent pyros on your team who will use the airblast or a sniper who isn't scared of coming down from the battlements to help extinguish your teammates.

Calling everyone who does this a griefer, however, is going a bit far.

Agreed 100% Soulmate. If they have a heavy incoming, then I would be more than happy to see the teleporters there, and a dispenser too! As a mater of fact, a dispenser can be walked through by your team, and cannot be passed at all by spys, and with the incline, there is too much of a jump for spys to jump over it. Why build a teleporter to stop everyone when a dispenser would only stop the enemy? Given that option, and them having made the teleporter decision, I can only surmise that they are trying to hold back everyone(or making bad decisions, lol).
  14. Inflatable Soulmate Dev Team Leader

Sure, but that puts the teleporter in a vulnerable position away from the sentry, which means that the sentry is now vulnerable because the engie is going to be killed while trying to defend it, it will take much longer to upgrade, and the dispenser will also provide a place for enemies to hide from the sentry's fire.

Exactly. This is NOT trolling, it's people actually using their head when playing the game. It's smart, and it works. That's all there is to it.

It's not grieving and never was.......... End of discussion
