I am making this thread a sticky because it may help us determine our next platform. BF3 - Requires an Origin account, but not the Origin software, or so I'm told. - Will have dedicated servers. MW3 - Will be on Steam, we all have that already - Will have dedicated servers, announced today! http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/08/17/modern-warfare-3-to-have-dedicated-servers/ Every one can list pros and cons here, maybe we can support both games as they will both be hot!
Infinity Ward: I just don't trust a company that has taken the position that they are better at running a community than gaming communities are. With MW2, they lost the trust of the gaming community. The reason they are allowing communities to host their own servers is because their attempt to control their market failed. I'm not sure I trust that they have learned anything of real value from this failure.
I think MW2 was their attempt at an experiment. The experiment failed. Whether they realize that the experiment failed or that they heard from the gamers yelling at them is up for opinion. But since they will have dedicated servers I do not see why we could not have one of each and just see which succeeds. I already ordered MW3 and will get BF3 as well. Keep the thoughts coming ya'll!
I purchased BF3 for the PC as I built a brand new one just so I could play it with everything maxed. I'm going to rent MW3 for the 360 for the single player though. I was in the closed Alpha for BF3 and even though it had one level and mode (Rush, which I hate. Conquest FTW.), I played over 39 hours in about an eight day span. It will be my main game once it comes out on Oct. 25. BF3: - The whole 'Origin needed to play' portion doesn't bother me one bit. It was a smooth process to switch servers. Granted, it's little a little different having to go back to the internet browser to change servers, but I had no problem. - The 'Battlelog' is EXTREMELY well done. It's a clean, simple and informative inteface that has all the stats you'll ever want. -There is also suppose to be over four times as many unlocks and rewards than in BC2 so it'll keep me playing for years to come. -Vehicles! Including jets! -64 players - Destruction! I shot a rocket launcher at a balcony that was above a guy, the rubble fell on him and I got an environment kill for it. THAT was sweet. - First person knife kills are awesome - even if you're the one getting killed. Seeing everything first person makes it so much personal. - While this might be a con to some, it is a BIG pro for me - no killstreaks. You just get extra points/medals. - More of an emphasis on teamwork rather than going lone wolf. - The new 'suppressive fire' system works very well too. Needs some fine tuning when I played in the Alpha, but I was impressed over all. If you shot at the cover that you knew someone was behind, the edges of their screen goes all blurry and it makes their shots less accurate. If that enemy is killed while you are suppressing him, you get 'suppressive fire' points. MW3: While I am not as big of a fan of the CoD franchise anymore as they haven't changed much since MW1, I certainly see the appeal. It's an easy, accesible shooter that works well if you just want to shoot people. I'm more interested in the single player portion than the multiplayer portion. Although, the new co-op mode looks interesting.
This is a bit scary and definitely makes me want to stay away from BF3: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/08/24/eas-origin-eula-proves-even-more-sinister/ It is the security guy in me, but i hate spying and shifty EULA's...
Hmm, maybe I'll buy a machine for gaming only and perform all web surfing, purchases, etc., on a different system. But, I gotta agree with Juvix, BF3 looks too incredible to pass up...
I'm still leading towards MW3 the only part I don't like about it is that you'll need to pay per month to access a certain part of it(CoD Elite) which kinda sucks... I think BF3 may win this battle... It will also depend on the single player campaign... I hate spending 60$ for a game to have 4 hours of single player action...
For sure... I bought both and I end up playing mostly with Battlefield. Yes there are some things that are annoying in it but that's because people are douche bags. But those problems are in both games. So far I've found that the game is well protected from hackers with PunkBuster as PBBans are issued almost immediately upon cheat detection. As Shadow indicated, it can keep you going for a long time. I've logged almost 86 hours of online game play and I'm nowhere near finished. Shadow has 178 hours of online game play and still has a lot of things left to do in game. So obviously it's means to keep you going for a very long time.
